COMMUNITY NEWS

  • People Offering Direct Support will host its fourth Community Conversation on food insecurity—inviting local residents to discuss food challenges and share resources for families.  Globe Gazette
  • A Waterloo family is celebrating their move into a new home built by Habitat for Humanity in the Churchill neighborhood. The home dedication ceremony is set for later today when the family will receive the keys.  KWWL

CULTURE NEWS

  • Steve Carignan will retire as executive director of the UNI Gallagher Bluedorn Performing Arts Center in January 2026 after more than 26 years of leadership that transformed the venue into a top arts space—UNI will begin a national search for his successor soon.  KWWL

EDUCATION NEWS

  • The Gladbrook-Reinbeck School District bond measure passed by 17 votes survived a recount in Tama, Grundy, Black Hawk, and Marshall counties — all of which confirmed the original election night results. The district will use the bond to add new classroom space to the junior and senior high school in Reinbeck.  KWWL

ENVIRONMENT NEWS

  • Crews in Waterloo are preparing for the first winter storm of the season — expected to make roads slick and snowy late Friday night into early Saturday — and the street department will pre-treat roads with salt brine based on early-week rain. The preparations aim to keep traffic moving during late-night Black Friday shopping.  KWWL

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Residents are advised by the Iowa Department of Insurance and Financial Services to winterize homes and vehicles for holiday safety — checking insulation, servicing furnaces and cleaning gutters, and insulating pipes to prevent frozen lines. They are urged to prepare an emergency kit and verify insurance policies—steps designed to prevent fire hazards and scams during winter.  KWWL

  • East High School has named Jason Strelow as its new head softball coach — pending board approval — and he will lead the Trojans in the 2026 season. The alumnus and seasoned travel ball coach, known for his state championships since 2014, brings a strong record and deep school ties to the role.  KWWL
