- ➤ Waterloo will soon be home to a new brewery hub as Backpocket Brewing and Peace Tree Brewing relocate production to SingleSpeed Brewing Co.’s facility in early 2026—combining three Iowa craft breweries into one operation with a taproom and collaborative production. KWWL
- ➤ SingleSpeed Brewing announced that Backpocket Brewing and Peace Tree Brewing will combine production in Waterloo at the former Wonder Bread factory on Commercial Street. The new facility—The Brewery at Wonder Bread—will open in early 2026 pending city approval. KCRG

EDUCATION NEWS
- ➤ The University of Northern Iowa's Center for Civic Education in Cedar Falls received a $1.22 million grant from the U.S. Department of Education to launch the Iowa Civic Educators Institute that will improve civic education for teachers. UNI President Mark Nook said the three-year project provided professional development and stipends to support local schools. KWWL
ENVIRONMENT NEWS
- ➤ The Iowa Geological Survey is inspecting flood levees in Waterloo and Cedar Falls using technology that goes 20 feet underground to find weak spots at Cedar Bend Park. The data will help direct future funding as part of the third year of a five-year directive to repair Iowa's levee systems. KWWL
GOVERNMENT NEWS
- ➤ Crews in Waterloo began tearing out and rebuilding La Porte Road today from the KOA Campground entrance to Bopp Street—part of a project set to be completed by 2029. Work on the next phase from Ridgeway Avenue to Highway 218 will start in spring to update the road before winter. KWWL

- ➤ MercyOne will hold a series of Free Mammo Nights aimed at women 40 and older who face financial challenges to getting annual mammograms—appointments are limited and must be scheduled by calling 319-292-2225. The screenings will take place on October 9 at MercyOne Oelwein Medical Center, October 16 at MercyOne Cedar Falls Medical Center, and November 6 at MercyOne Waterloo Breast Center. KWWL
