- ➤ The National Cattle Congress Fair returns to Waterloo today and runs through Sunday with carnival rides, food, live music, agriculture contests, dairy shows and a rodeo making a comeback—celebrating 115 years since its start as the State Dairy Show in 1910. KWWL
- ➤ Queen of Peace Church, a historic church in downtown Waterloo, requires more than $2.3M in repairs after its roof partially collapsed and has closed its main area with services now held in the basement. Engineers say repair costs exceed insurance coverage — the church awaits guidance from the Archdiocese of Dubuque. KWWL
BUSINESS NEWS
- ➤ International Paper began work on its new plant near the airport and placed the first pre-cast panel at the 850,000-square-foot site on Leversee Road—officials say the plant will be the largest box maker in the nation that creates 72 new jobs now and will eventually employ 220 people. KWWL
ECONOMY NEWS
- ➤ John Deere announced job cuts at its Waterloo Operations and Des Moines Works facilities because of lower demand. 101 Waterloo workers will have their last day on October 17 and 40 Des Moines workers on October 31 while the company will invest almost 20 billion dollars in U.S. manufacturing and provide benefits such as unemployment support and six months of health care.
