CRIME NEWS

  • Matthew James Wessels, 44, of Waterloo pleaded guilty to conspiracy to distribute a controlled substance during summer 2024 – he admitted to distributing over 13 pounds of ice meth – and was sentenced to more than 19 years in federal prison and 10 years of supervised release.  KWWL
  • Police responded to a late-night assault on the 200 block of State Street when a woman fled her home after receiving a non-life-threatening stab wound—officers later located 58-year-old Robert Dartz at a nearby house on Linden Ave and took him into custody on charges including willful injury-bodily harm and second-degree domestic assault.  KWWL

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Two Waterloo Community Schools students, Elijah Smith and LaTreyal Oliver, won the John Lewis Leadership Award for Iowa—an honor for civic engagement—for their research on distracted driving that helped pass Iowa's new hands-free driving law.  KWWL

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Federal law may soon exempt tips and overtime pay from income tax, potentially boosting take-home pay for service workers from December 31st, 2024 through 2028. Iowa lawmakers did not pass similar state tax breaks during the 2025 legislative session and may revisit the proposals when the legislature reconvenes next year—efforts that could help workers keep more of their earnings.  Globe Gazette
