COMMUNITY NEWS

  • The Waterloo Public Library announced a schedule of events for the coming week and noted that it will be closed on Sundays until Aug. 31. Activities will include an egg carton craft workshop (Mon 12 to 1), a virtual discussion group (Mon 6 to 7), a teen board game day (Tue 1 to 4), a book club, sandbox play and tech drop-in (Wed 10:00 to 11:30 and 3 to 4), 3-D printing lessons (Thu 2 to 3), and an adult puzzle club with a floral pop-up card workshop for fourth and fifth graders (Fri 9:30 to 11 and 1 to 2).  Waterloo-Cedar Falls Courier

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Gov. Kim Reynolds signed a law on Friday that will require some able-bodied Medicaid recipients to meet work requirements & risk changes in their coverage. The new rule will apply to those already on Medicaid in Iowa.  Globe Gazette
  • Iowa Gov. Kim Reynolds signed a law on Friday that expands disability insurance to cover all forms of cancer for firefighters and police—under the law, all types of cancer treatment must now be included in the coverage.  Globe Gazette
  • Friday, Gov. Kim Reynolds signed 25 bills that distributed $56M from an opioid settlement, with $29M allocated to immediate care + additional funds for crisis response and a law that raised penalties for open meeting violations. The bills also adjusted state tax incentives, banned ticket bots + required schools to show fetal development videos as part of health lessons.  Globe Gazette
