- ➤ Nathan Jiles, a Hiawatha man, was sentenced to 14 years in federal prison after he hit police vehicles with his car, refused to obey orders, and brandished a loaded firearm near I-380 and Blairs Ferry Road. KCRG
GOVERNMENT NEWS
- ➤ Gov. Kim Reynolds announced that Iowa school districts and public charter schools may apply for literacy grants worth $24 million with planning funds open until June 10, and that awards of up to $20,000 through the STEM BEST program will fund summer work opportunities in schools such as Waterloo. She also approved a Presidential Disaster Declaration for four western counties after blizzard damage and formed a bipartisan Auditors Advisory Group to help secure state elections. Globe Gazette
- ➤ The Iowa Supreme Court reinstated parts of a lawsuit brought by families of Waterloo Tyson workers who died from COVID after a district judge had dismissed the cases as workers compensation claims. The court ruled that the company’s executive and supervisory defendants acted with gross negligence+ knew of the COVID risks and failed to protect their workers. KCRG
