COMMUNITY NEWS

  • VFW Post 1623 in Waterloo closed its doors after failing to elect new leaders amid ongoing financial troubles. Only five of over 80 members attended a meeting to fill officer roles, and officials say the post could reopen with a new number if 25 members (15 new) join.  KWWL
  • Cedar Bend Humane Society opens its new public dog park for community use today, with sessions also on May 15 and 17. The park has indoor climate-controlled spaces, outdoor fenced areas, and both communal play and private rentals (first-time visitors must register online).  KWWL
  • Local law enforcement gathered Wednesday for the annual Black Hawk County Peace Officer Memorial Service to honor 14 officers killed in service since 1902, with names read aloud to mark their sacrifice & Waterloo Police Chief Rob Duncan stressing the need for constant vigilance in an uncertain line of duty.  KWWL

CULTURE NEWS

  • Black Hawk Children's Theatre will open its production of Sideways Stories from Wayside School Friday in Waterloo. The performance will offer local audiences a fresh theatrical experience.  Waterloo-Cedar Falls Courier
  • The North Iowa Band Festival Parade is scheduled for May 23, featuring the festival's royalty. The 87th edition (highlighting local band talents) will bring festive energy to the season.  Globe Gazette

ECONOMY NEWS

  • Construction is underway at the TechWorks campus on the CourtWorks indoor sports facility that is expected to open soon, generate $17 million a year, and boost the local economy as Waterloo aims to become (Sports Town USA) with more than $31 million raised for the project.  KWWL

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Waterloo Schools Board of Education approved changes for the 2026-27 school year, cutting five school days and extending daily schedules by five minutes to meet state requirements. The calendar sets East High commencement for Tuesday, May 18, West High for Tuesday, May 19, and Expo ALC for Wednesday, May 20.  KWWL
