COMMUNITY NEWS

  • Cedar Bend Humane Society announced that its Paws Pantry along West Airline Highway in Waterloo is closed through May because of a temporary pet food shortage and will reopen in June if supplies allow.  KWWL
  • The Northeast Iowa Food Bank is hosting its largest fundraiser today at the Bien VenU Event Center in Cedar Falls. The Empty Bowls event runs from 6 to 9 p.m. and will feature a soup buffet + live and silent auctions.  KWWL

CULTURE NEWS

  • Jesse Cosby Center is set to host its 59th annual Black and White Gala (Rooted in Resilience) that honors generations of families who overcame hardship and stayed connected to the community.  Waterloo-Cedar Falls Courier

ECONOMY NEWS

  • Experience Waterloo has announced plans for a tourism boom as local attractions and businesses prepare to welcome more visitors. The initiative will boost resources and readiness in Waterloo as the city gears up for increased tourism.  Waterloo-Cedar Falls Courier

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Hawkeye Community College is seeking bids on $3.3 million in job training funds as four Cedar Valley companies plan to train 364 people for new jobs.  Waterloo-Cedar Falls Courier
  • Superintendent Jared Smith recommended that Waterloo Schools join the Mississippi Valley Conference for Titans athletics in the 2028-29 school year (pending board approval).  Waterloo-Cedar Falls Courier

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Hawkeye Community College approved its 2026-27 budget estimate, which includes an 8% increase in property tax collections, & scheduled a public hearing on April 28 to review the change.  Waterloo-Cedar Falls Courier

REAL ESTATE NEWS

  • Demolition crews finished tearing down Dillard's at Crossroads Mall and are now removing hazardous materials from Younkers as part of the Boulevard redevelopment project + the full mall demolition will take all of 2026 with new construction set to start in 2027.  KWWL
