- ➤ Bitter cold has stalled vehicles and created risky driving conditions on Waterloo roads as trooper Jared Arbegast (a state patrol officer) advises drivers to remain inside and keep gas tanks at least half full for safety. Today he assisted a stranded driver reach her vision appointment. KWWL
EDUCATION NEWS
- ➤ Nominations opened January 19 for the Gold Star Award for Outstanding Teaching organized by the R. J. McElroy Trust and KWWL in Black Hawk County. Eligible non-administrative teachers at certified schools can be nominated until Feb. 20, with each honoree receiving a $1,000 cash award and a matching classroom grant. KWWL
ENVIRONMENT NEWS
- ➤ Cold weather halted part of Waterloo’s recycling route on Friday when Republic Services experienced mechanical issues, and the trucks will return Monday to finish collections; the city advises residents to keep recycling carts at the curb. KWWL

- ➤ Today, Waterloo Regional Airport is taking extra steps to keep the terminal warm + ensure aircraft maintain power amid freezing temperatures. No cancellations have occurred, and staff advise passengers to bundle up when moving between cars and the terminal. KWWL
HEALTH NEWS
- ➤ As temperatures fall quickly and frostbite can occur within minutes, UnityPoint Health’s ER advises older adults (and infants) to stay indoors and warm up. The hospital is ready with treatments like warm saline, blankets, and advanced procedures if signs of cold injury appear. KWWL
