ACCIDENTS NEWS

  • Three children from a Waterloo family died after a crash in Kenya on Jan. 4 — two died at the scene and one later in hospital — and funds are being raised to help cover funeral and medical costs.  KCRG
  • Residents in Cedar Valley were startled by a loud boom this morning (7:30 a.m.) that shook houses and woke people near Tibbetts Park and Sans Souci Island; local authorities reported no calls about the incident and have not investigated the cause.  KWWL

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Today, Waterloo held its annual Condition of Guard address to honor Iowa Guard soldiers killed during a counterterrorism mission near Palmyra when a lone gunman fired on U.S. forces. Officials recognized the fallen service members’ sacrifice and bravery at the ceremony.  Globe Gazette
  • Waterloo Regional Airport reported its busiest year since before the pandemic with over 40,000 passengers so far and is holding discussions with airlines to add new routes. The TSA PreCheck pop-up enrollment (which speeds up security screening) will run from Feb. 10 to Feb. 13.  KWWL

  • Diane Anderson, a local cancer survivor, teams with the UNI women's basketball team to boost the ACT Fund—covering treatment costs for local residents—with extra donations for each three-pointer scored at the Coaches vs. Cancer game on Jan. 25 at 2 p.m. at the McLeod Center in Cedar Falls.  KWWL
  • Top ranked Cedar Falls Boys (the Tigers) remained unbeaten as they jumped to an 18 point lead in the first half and beat tenth ranked Linn-Mar 67 to 53, marking their second win over the Lions this season.  KWWL
